Asterix & Obelix is a side-scrolling platformer based on the French comic Astérix, about a Gaulish warrior living in the only village in Gaul (France) that has so far resisted the Roman Empire. The game allows the player to choose either Asterix and Obelix, or play as both in the co-op mode. Obelix does not have his trademark invincibility in this game, and so the two characters are essentially equal. The player must select on the options menu which player (one or two) plays which hero: the default is Obelix as player one and Asterix as player two.

The game's story is loosely based on the fifth volume: Le Tour de Gaule d'Astérix, or Asterix and the Banquet. As in the comic, the duo decide to prove to the Romans that they can go anywhere they wish in spite of the large Roman palisade built around their village. However, instead of travelling Gaul to collect every region's specialty dish like in the comic, Asterix and Obelix instead travel the world and collect souvenirs from various countries to humiliate their aggressors. Each of these stages are themselves based a different comic, which often see the duo visiting a specific country for various reasons.

The game provides four language options, French being the default.
