Hyper Iria is a 2D side-scrolling shooter game that features the bounty hunter Iria in a game loosely based on Iria: Zeiram the Animation, a 1994 six-episode sci-fi anime OVA that served as a prequel for the 1991 live-action movie Zeiram. The rookie bounty hunter Iria joins her brother (her mentor) and his companions on a rescue mission that goes awry due to the presence of the vicious and apparently immortal alien shapeshifter Zeiram.

The game puts Iria and her robotic companion Bob (previously one of her brother's partners, whose consciousness was placed into a computer to save his life) into a labyrinthine military base, in which she has to dismantle the hostile security as well as alien creatures as she works her way to the core of the facility. She has a limited amount of ammunition with her weapons, and has to resort to melee attacks once the ammo runs out. She can also find grenades and other explosives, which are used via a secondary fire button.

The characters of Iria and Zeiram would also appear in the 1996 PlayStation brawler Zeiram Zone.
