Super Bomberman 5 is the fifth core game in Hudson's Bomberman series to be released on the Super Famicom, and the second to be exclusive to the Japan region. It follows a new villain, Emperor Terrorin, after he liberates all the criminals of Planet Bomber and empowers them with new abilities to take on White and Black Bomber. The game is known for its non-linearity and recycled content, bringing back zones from the previous four games.

The story mode can be played as either a single-player game or a two-player cooperative game. It also brings back the Battle Mode, allowing up to four players to take each other on across a series of special stages with their own rules to follow. One new inclusion for Super Bomberman 5's Battle Mode is being able to create custom Bombers.

A special gold cartridge that came with an issue of CoroCoro Comics was produced, featuring extra battle mode maps.
