The direct sequel to Dragon Ball Z II: Gekishin Furiiza!!, Dragon Ball Z III brings the card-based system to the third main Dragon Ball Z arc (known as the "Android Saga") of the Dragon Ball manga and anime (while adding elements from the ninth Dragon Ball animated film). With the destruction of Namek and the presumed deaths of Goku and Frieza, the other Z Warriors (who were teleported, along with the remaining Namekians, to Earth by the power of the Earth's Dragon Balls) set off to find the Namekian Dragon Balls on Earth. Afterwards, they must contend with a series of powerful enemies (including the forces of Frieza's brother Cooler and the androids of mad scientist Dr. Gero).

Along with the traditional cinematic battles of previous games, players can choose to use a faster automated system of combat.

Unlike other Dragon Ball games taking place during this saga, this game does not follow the final "Cell Games" part at all, ending on a cliffhanger prior.
