__long_description | Kuusou Kagaku Sekai Gulliver Boy ("Imagination Science World Gulliver Boy") is an action-adventure game based on the Toei anime of the same name. Gulliver Boy features an alternative Europe where magic is real, but rare, and exists side by side with science. The sinister King of Spain has decided to invade Venice, killing the young magician Gulliver's father and pushing him to enact revenge.
Kuusou Kagaku Sekai Gulliver Boy saw three distinct video game adaptations in a short amount of time, all with the same title. The first, released in April 1995 and also published by Bandai, is a Game Boy puzzle game. The second, released a month later by Hudson, is a turn-based RPG for the PC Engine CD-ROM that was later ported to the Sega Saturn. The third and final game, this one, was released for the Super Famicom.
The game was never officially localized into English but saw a fan translation from Stealth Translations in 2001. It was later cleaned up by another patch released in 2014.
Gulliver Boy plays similarly to Secret of Mana. The game has a top-down perspective with characters and enemies moving around in real-time. Gulliver has an attack that charges automatically after each swing, but attacking again before the attack has fully recharged produces a much weaker result. Gulliver can instantly switch to any companions he has with him, like Edison, who provide stronger attacks but have even longer charge-up times: the idea being to switch to them briefly for some major damage before going back to Gulliver.
The game has the player wandering around talking to NPCs and finding clues to where to go next. Certain areas of Venice are filled with enemies Gulliver can fight. |
