Volguard II is a horizontal shoot 'em up from dB Soft and the follow-up to their MSX game Volguard. Unlike its predecessor, Volguard II was released on Nintendo's Famicom system and was one of the first games published by dB-Soft for that platform. They also developed and published Galg in the same month. Players control a versatile shapeshifting craft that can turn into a jet plane or a mech. The mech has more firepower, but is also a bigger target. The game included a number of features that were novel for 1985 but would later become common in shoot 'em ups: power-ups, end stage bosses and attacking enemies from both the air and ground. Another novel feature is the player's health: a figure in the corner counts up to 99 whenever the player is hit, and lasts the whole game. If it reaches 99, the game is over, though it still allows the player to take a lot of punishment from the game's bullet hell bosses.
