__long_description | Mobile Suit Z Gundam: Hot Scramble is a game based on the Mobile Suit Z Gundam (or Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam) television series, the sequel to the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Based on the Gundam mecha anime license, it was developed by Game Studio for Bandai and originally released on the Japanese Famicom. It draws its story, characters, mecha and music from Mobile Suit Z Gundam.
The game is split into three gameplay modes: The first is a first-person shooter in which the player fights other mobile suits as they travel over the surface of the Earth, before breaking off into space where it switches to a first-person space sim as the player heads towards the enemy's orbital headquarters. After reaching the enemy base, the game moves to its third mode: a third-person, side-scrolling variant on Game Arts' Thexder in which the player's jet/robot transforming mech Gundam must navigate a maze of tunnels to reach the core of the base and blow it up. The modes then repeat for the next stage.
The game is best known for its first-person shooter modes, both the Earth and space segments. The game featured several elements that would later become common in later first-person shooter games, such as displaying the player's gun on screen, and aiming and locking-on to enemies. The open space segments also gave the illusion of six degrees of freedom. |
