The sequel to Dragon Ball 3: Gokuuden, Dragon Ball Z brings the card-based system to the earliest Dragon Ball Z arc (known as the "Saiyan Saga") of the Dragon Ball manga and anime (while adding elements from the fourth Dragon Ball animated film). Taking place five years after the events of Gokuuden, martial artist Goku (and the reformed Piccolo) defeat alien invader Raditz (who reveals himself as part of a race of "Saiyans", which Goku is also revealed to be part of), only to find out that a powerful pair of Saiyans (Vegeta and Nappa) are on their way to Earth. While Goku trains with King Kai, his comrades are out searching for Dragon Balls (and confronting the forces of Garlic Jr. in the process).

Unlike its predecessor, the game focuses more on its traditional RPG elements (while still retaining the series's unique card-based system for movement and combat). Along with new combat animations and free-form grid-based movement, the game allows players to take control of multiple party members (each with their own unique abilities and upgradable stats). It also features a bonus game mode that allows players to fight in a tournament using their surviving endgame characters (using a password system).
